On a bustling street corner in Liniers, a beacon of hope stands tall. This is the Iglesia San Cayetano, a sanctuary where the faithful seek solace and blessings for their daily bread and honest labor. Iglesia San Cayetano opened its doors on September 30, 1875. Originally a small chapel built by the Sisters of the Divine Savior, it served the spiritual needs of the growing community. The land, once belonging to Maria Mercedes Cordova, was donated to the sisters in 1830. They not only built the chapel dedicated to San Cayetano but also established a convent and a school for girls, which still exists today as the Colegio de San Cayetano. The church officially became the Parroquia de San Cayetano in 1913. The present school building followed a year later. Cardinal Juan Carlos Aramburu later declared the church a sanctuary. Every 7th of the month, and especially on August 7th, the feast day of San Cayetano, the church pulsates with the energy of thousands of devotees. They come seeking intervention for employment and sustenance, creating lines that stretch for blocks. The tradition of venerating San Cayetano as the patron saint of work and provision gained momentum in the 1930s, thanks to Father Domingo Falgioni. He promoted San Cayetano as a source of hope for the needy during the challenging times of the Great Depression. The image of San Cayetano holding the child Jesus and a stalk of wheat, symbolizing his patronage, became widespread thanks to Father Falgioni. The Iglesia San Cayetano is more than just a building. It is a testament to faith, hope, and the enduring human spirit. It serves as a starting point for the annual youth pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Luján in October, a further demonstration of the deep-rooted faith that emanates from this special place in Liniers.
