A hushed reverence hangs in the air. We stand before the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios a testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Buenos Aires. This unassuming church holds a rich history stretching back centuries.

Its story begins not in Buenos Aires but far away in Mexico. The image of Our Lady of Remedies was first venerated by Spanish conquistadors. Hernán Cortés himself placed it in the main Aztec temple in 1521. Imagine that journey across oceans and continents.

Then the image arrived in Buenos Aires. During the devastating 1727 typhus epidemic it was proclaimed the city’s “Minor Patroness”. People prayed for protection from the deadly fever. A pious man Juan Alonso González y Aragón established the Brotherhood of the Holy Charity of Our Lord Jesus Christ. He sought Our Lady of Remedies’ protection.

The brotherhood owned the historic Estancia de los Remedios. It covered 120 hectares. Clemente and Domingo Olivera acquired and managed it. Doña Dolores P. F. de Olivera rediscovered the Virgin’s image there. The image had been honored in this retreat for years. She revived its worship among the local people.

In 1910 the city of Buenos Aires purchased the property. It transformed the land into what is now Parque Avellaneda. Doña Dolores M. de Olivera entrusted the miraculous image to the Salesian priests of Don Bosco’s Work. In 1924 they received a plot of land near the old estate. They built the church and a school. This was thanks to the generous donation of land and the efforts of a dedicated committee. The current school building was constructed in 1963. This was thanks to the generosity of the Ghioldi sisters Matilde and Virginia. They dedicated it to the memory of their brother Carlos Luis Ghioldi.

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de los Remedios stands as a silent witness to epidemics plagues and transformations. It reminds us that even amidst great adversity faith can find a way to endure. The church reflects the devotion of generations who found solace and hope within its walls. Take a moment to reflect upon the layers of history embodied in this remarkable place. This simple church in Buenos Aires holds a history far grander than its unassuming exterior suggests. It links the past and present through enduring faith.
