The grey sandstone gleams under the Mexican sun. This is the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Soledad. Its Neoclassical facade whispers stories of faith and resilience.
Built between 1774 and 1787 the church stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Mexico City. It’s more than just a building. It is a living monument. It’s the heart of the old Coltzingo neighborhood. The neighborhood was once home to many carpenters and woodworkers. That’s why the church is dedicated to Santa Cruz the Holy Cross.
Originally an “Indian parish” in 1633 the church has seen many incarnations. Several earlier buildings including a hermitage consecrated in 1731 preceded this one. The current structure however represents a significant architectural achievement. It’s mostly unchanged since its completion. A national monument since 1982 it boasts a stunning Neoclassical design.
Look closely at the facade. The figures represent symbolic elements of Christ’s Passion. John the Baptist and Mary Magdalene stand below. Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea are above. Between them a carved image of the Virgin of Solitude watches over the plaza.
Step inside. The rectangular interior with its three naves is both imposing and serene. Six sculpted Neoclassical columns support the main nave. Archways lead to other sections. Red and white mosaics adorn the main nave’s floor. Green and white mosaics cover the presbytery. The large choir extends over the back of all three naves. It’s supported by elegant arches. The wooden tabernacle houses the revered image of the Virgin of Solitude.
The church maintains extensive historical archives. Some documents date back to 1633. These records offer a glimpse into the community’s rich past. Today the church continues to serve its community. It provides meals and assistance to those in need. These acts of charity often fill the plaza in front of the church with life and warmth.
From its humble beginnings as an Indian parish to its current status as a national monument the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Soledad stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and community.
