Imagine standing at the foot of the Tepeyac Hill. You are right in front of the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This Basilica stands as Mexico’s chief religious center.

The Basilica of Guadalupe is a Roman Catholic church. It is officially the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In Spanish, it is Basílica de Guadalupe or Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.

Do you know about the apparitions of the Virgin Mary? Four apparitions were reportedly seen by Juan Diego. Juan Diego was an Indigenous convert. This occurred in December 1531. The Virgin Mary commanded that a church be built in her honor.

The last apparition resulted in a painted image. This image appeared on Juan Diego’s cloak. It became known as Our Lady of Guadalupe. This event greatly hastened the conversion of Indigenous people to Christianity.

In 1754, a papal bull declared the Virgin of Guadalupe the patroness of New Spain. Later, in 1810, she became a symbol. She symbolized the Mexican independence movement. Patriot-priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla raised her picture on his banner.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims visit. They come from all over the world to this church. It is the holiest in Mexico. Pope Pius X granted it basilica status in 1904.

The present church is sometimes called the Old Basilica. It was finished in 1709. It was built on the site of an earlier 16th-century church. The basilica became dangerous. Its foundations were sinking.

So, a modern structure was built nearby. It is called the New Basilica. The original image of the Virgin of Guadalupe is now housed there.

Villa de Guadalupe Hidalgo has historical significance. It was the site of a treaty signing. The United States and Mexico signed the treaty on February 2 1848. This treaty ended the Mexican-American War.

The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe is also known as La Villa de Guadalupe. Many people simply call it La Villa. The site includes several churches and related buildings.

The present church was constructed in 1974-1976. The new Basilica has a circular floor plan. This design ensures that the image of the Virgin can be seen from any point within the building. The circular structure is 100 meters in diameter. It can accommodate up to 10000 people.

The icon of Juan Diego’s cloak was housed in the old church from 1709 to 1974. The old basilica is officially known as Templo Expiatorio a Cristo Rey. Construction began in 1695. It was not finished until 1709. Pedro de Arrieta was the main architect.

The old basilica has a Doric interior. Marble statues depict Fray Juan de Zumárraga and Juan Diego. These statues are featured in the altarpiece. The altarpiece originally held the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

In 1921, an anticlerical terrorist planted a bomb. It exploded causing great damage to the building’s interior. The cloak survived. The New Basilica displays an iron crucifix. It is called the attempt on Christ in memory of this incident.

The Virgin of Guadalupe is a Catholic title of Mary. It is associated with Marian apparitions. These apparitions occurred in December 1531. The basilica is the most-visited Catholic shrine in the world. It is the world’s third most-visited sacred site.

Every year, about twenty million pilgrims visit the sanctuary. Annually, the Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe has at least twice as many visitors as the best-known Marian shrines.

The old basilica has four octagonal towers. They are on each of its corners. There are fifteen vaults. An octagonal dome features a lantern. It is covered in Talavera yellow and blue. In 1749, it received the title of collegiate church.

Today, the Basilica continues to be a beacon of faith. It is a symbol of Mexican identity. Its story echoes through the hearts of millions who visit each year. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe remains a testament to devotion.
