From a beggar’s whispered prayer to a president’s solemn oath, the Iglesia Jesús Sacramentado has silently witnessed the ebb and flow of Buenos Aires life. This sanctuary, nestled in the heart of Almagro at Avenida Corrientes 4433, has been a spiritual anchor for over a century. The Iglesia Jesús Sacramentado first opened its doors on May 17, 1904. Its neo-gothic architecture, a testament to the vision of architects Merry, Raines, and Sackmann, was funded by the generosity of local residents and benefactors Santos Unzué and Carlota Diaz de Vivar. The cornerstone was laid in 1893, a testament to the unwavering faith of Mother María Benita Arias, founder of the Servants of Jesus the Blessed Sacrament. Though she wouldn’t live to see its completion, her devotion to the Eucharist infused the very stones of the Iglesia Jesús Sacramentado. The church boasts a single nave, a spacious presbytery, and two choirs, all crafted with meticulous detail. Beneath the sacristy lies a crypt, bathed in soft light. Here, Mother María Benita Arias rests alongside the Unzué family, their shared legacy woven into the fabric of the sanctuary. This isn’t just a place of worship; it’s a repository of dreams, a testament to the enduring power of faith. In 2010, Pope Francis, then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, declared the Iglesia Jesús Sacramentado a Eucharistic sanctuary. This designation, a rare honor, solidified its place as a beacon of hope and devotion in Buenos Aires. The church houses a magnificent German “Walker” organ. Its resonant tones once filled the sanctuary, until it fell silent, a victim of theft in 1970. Decades later, the music returned, breathing life back into the grand space. The Iglesia Jesús Sacramentado continues to serve the community. It hosts events, welcomes worshippers, and offers solace to those seeking refuge. It stands as a symbol of resilience, a reminder of the unwavering spirit of those who built it.
