Gazing upon the Iglesia Jesús de la Buena Esperanza, a captivating tale unfolds. This church, nestled in Quito, holds a story as intriguing as its name, which translates to “Jesus of Good Hope”. The story begins not here, but in 1652 Quito with a wandering mule carrying a mysterious, heavy load. The mule, seemingly guided by an unseen force, arrived at the doorstep of the San Agustín Convent and collapsed. The monks, curious and cautious, opened the crate the mule carried. Inside, they found a beautiful sculpture of Jesus of Good Hope. He wore a velvet tunic and golden sandals studded with precious jewels. They attempted to move the statue into the convent, but it was impossibly heavy. So, the statue remained at the convent’s entrance, becoming a site of pilgrimage. The Iglesia Jesús de la Buena Esperanza, as we know it today, owes its existence to this miraculous arrival. One day, a poor man named Gabriel Cayancela came to pray to Jesus of Good Hope for relief from his destitution. As he prayed, the sacristan warned him of the sanctuary’s closing. He returned the next morning to continue his prayer. As he pleaded for help, one of the statue’s jeweled sandals fell into his hands. Desperate for money, Gabriel sold the sandal. The jeweler, recognizing the sandal as belonging to Jesus of Good Hope, accused Gabriel of theft. The townspeople, outraged, quickly condemned Gabriel to death. As a final request, Gabriel asked to be brought before the statue. There, he lamented that the Lord’s gift had become his death sentence. He was being punished for receiving the means to escape his misery. As Gabriel spoke, Jesus of Good Hope extended his other foot, and the remaining sandal fell into Gabriel’s hands. The crowd, witnessing this miracle, demanded Gabriel’s release. The authorities bought the sandal from Gabriel at a high price, freeing him from poverty. The miracle is forever enshrined in the image of Jesus of Good Hope, a testament to the power of faith and hope. The Iglesia Jesús de la Buena Esperanza stands as a symbol of divine intervention and a reminder that hope can emerge from even the darkest of circumstances.
