It was a labor of love. Indigenous hands shaped its stones. Master craftsmen guided their work. Carpenters. Masons. Stone cutters and carvers. Each contributed their expertise.

The stones themselves were brought from Gatazo mines. A journey as long and arduous as the construction itself. The Basilica. This church in Riobamba. Is an architectural marvel. Its walls and interior columns are unique. A testament to the vision of its creators. They are crowned by a rotunda and a towering central dome. The facade boasts two high towers. An impressive 45-meter-high arch completes the ensemble.

Inside images of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are displayed. Images of profound religious significance fill the space. In the main altar. One can admire the image of Christ. The altar of Saint Joseph is priceless. Its form and details are exquisite. The main facade displays a statue of Christ the King. It was erected to celebrate the Centenary of the First Constituent Assembly. At the foot of the statue. Two phrases from the First Charter of the State are engraved. “In the name of God Author and Legislator of Society”.

A grand cupola dominates the center. A cross crowns it. The sides are adorned with several cupolas. The Basilica del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús in Riobamba. Is not just a building.
