Gazing upon the Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Esperanza, one can’t help but feel a sense of history. This church, also known as Parroquia Esperanza, stands proudly on Avenida Corrientes 718. It’s more than just a beautiful building; it represents a pivotal moment in South American religious history. The Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Esperanza holds the distinction of being the first Methodist church in all of South America. Its story begins in 1836 with the arrival of John Dempster, a missionary sent from North America. Dempster’s mission was to establish a religious sanctuary for the growing Protestant communities, particularly those of American, British, and German descent. The original temple was located elsewhere, on Cangallo Street. However, the current structure we admire today replaced it. Construction began in 1871, with the grand opening in 1874. Architect Enrique Hunt designed the striking neo-Gothic style building. The Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Esperanza’s roof is a unique marvel. Crafted by Danish sailors stranded in Buenos Aires, it resembles an inverted ship’s keel. The church’s beautiful stained-glass windows, depicting classic Christian imagery, were imported from England. Inside, a treasure awaits: a magnificent pipe organ built in 1882 by British craftsmen James Alderson Forster and Joseph King Andrews. This organ is a rarity, one of the few of British origin found in Buenos Aires. In the year 2000, the city legislature recognized the Iglesia Evangelica Metodista Esperanza’s significance, declaring it a Site of Cultural Interest. This designation solidified its place not just as a religious center, but as an important part of Buenos Aires’s cultural heritage.
