Founded in 1909 this Buenos Aires church boasts a rich legacy. It began with a single Canadian missionary Alicia Wood. She arrived in Argentina spreading the Gospel’s message. She even taught children to read and write. Years later in 1917 she established another church in 25 de Mayo. This became a pivotal center for missionary work. It trained ministers spreading the word to neighboring communities.
Missionaries from across Europe and the United States joined the effort. They worked tirelessly to spread the Pentecostal movement’s message. In 1940 El Heraldo de la Paz a magazine was published. This reached 2500 readers sharing news with fellow evangelicals.
The church’s growth was nothing short of remarkable. The desire for official recognition led to the creation of the Unión de las Asambleas de Dios in Argentina on June 8 1947. Legal recognition followed in 1948 solidifying their place in the community.
By 1949 the Unión boasted 20 churches. An important event was a 1954 campaign led by evangelist Tommy Hicks. This took place at Club Atlanta’s stadium. President Juan Perón granted permission for this event ensuring police protection. Radio broadcasts also spread the message. The response was immense. Newspapers estimated crowds of up to 200000 people each night. Many were healed.
