“A church born from the need to worship closer to home?” you might ask. You are right in front of the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel. This church, a beloved landmark in Tuineje, has a rich history. It all began in 1695 with the villagers’ longing for a place of worship closer to home. Journeying to Agua de Bueyes or Pájara for mass was arduous. Especially during the challenging winter months. They envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to their patron saint, San Miguel Arcángel. The villagers’ dedication led to the construction of a humble, single-nave church. It was inaugurated in 1702. Over time, the Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel underwent significant transformations. A testament to the enduring faith of its people. The late 18th century saw the addition of a grand chapel and a second nave. Today, the church stands as a beautiful blend of architectural styles. You can witness Tuscan columns supporting graceful arches. The intricate altarpiece, crafted from polychromed and gilded wood, is a sight to behold. The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a symbol of resilience and community spirit. Standing here, one can almost hear the echoes of prayers. The joyous celebrations, the quiet moments of reflection that have filled this sacred space for centuries.
