“A church opening a cemetery?” I overheard a tour guide say, his voice laced with intrigue. “During an epidemic? Let’s explore the Iglesia de San Miguel Apostol, where compassion met crisis.” The Iglesia de San Miguel Apostol stands as a testament to resilience and faith in the heart of Mexico City. Originally founded in 1690 by the church of San Lucas el Evangelista, the church found its permanent home in 1692. The building, overseen by Don Alonso Alberto de Velasco, was completed and consecrated in 1714. Its facade, a masterpiece by Pedro de Arrieta, the architect behind the Basilica of Guadalupe, features two octagonal towers, echoing Arrieta’s signature style. The Iglesia de San Miguel Apostol played a vital role during the devastating epidemic of 1737. The church bravely opened a new cemetery, offering solace and dignity to the afflicted. The priests of the parish tirelessly worked to ease the suffering of the community. Their efforts remain a powerful reminder of the church’s unwavering dedication to its people. In 1850, the church underwent renovations led by Don José Sotero Zúñiga. Neoclassical altars, adorned with stucco and gold leaf, replaced the original Baroque interior. Sadly, much of this splendor was lost during the Reform period in 1861. The church’s facade is a study in architectural harmony. Two sets of Ionic columns grace the first level, leading the eye upward to a marble relief of Archangel Michael beneath an oval choir window. Inside, the main altar is complemented by six additional altars along the north and south sides. A dedicated chapel honors the Virgen del Pilar. Another pays tribute to San José. While the plaza outside buzzes with activity, the Iglesia de San Miguel Apostol offers a tranquil respite. Its former atrium, now the Jardín San Miguel, provides a welcome green space. It even offers access to the Pino Suárez Metro Station. So, the next time you find yourself near the bustling plaza, step into the Iglesia de San Miguel Apostol. Let the echoes of its compassionate history resonate within you.
