Whispers of history echo within the ancient walls of the Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales. This church, the oldest religious structure in Tegucigalpa, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith. The Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales was founded in the 16th century by Franciscan missionaries who sought to bring their beliefs to the Real de Minas de Tegucigalpa. Originally completed in 1590, the Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales later underwent reconstruction in 1735. This renovation, ordered by Bishop Fray Antonio Guadalupe López Portillo, further solidified the church’s presence in the heart of the city. Inside the Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales, a rich tapestry of artistry unfolds. Don Diego de Aguileta y Peralta, in 1665, generously commissioned a gilded altarpiece for the image of the crucified Christ. Another altarpiece, showcasing a blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, stands as a masterpiece from the Guatemalan School of Carving. This 17th-century creation by Vicente Gálvez adds another layer of artistic depth to the church’s interior. During the 18th century, further enhancements were made. Additional Baroque altarpieces and Solomonic columns were installed, completing the church’s elaborate interior design. The Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales houses a remarkable collection of religious art from the 16th and 18th centuries. Among these treasures are paintings by Zepeda and Villafranca. Various images, including those of San Juan, Cristo de la Misericordia, and the Señor de Esquipulas, add to the church’s spiritual atmosphere. The image of San Francisco de Asís, the patron saint of the Franciscan order and to whom the church is dedicated, holds a place of honor within the sanctuary. Images of Santa Teresa de Jesús and the Inmaculada Concepción de María further enrich the church’s artistic and spiritual heritage. A painting of the Virgen de Guadalupe completes this remarkable collection. The Iglesia de San Francisco de Sales has witnessed centuries of history unfold. Its walls have absorbed the prayers, hopes, and dreams of countless individuals. It stands not just as a place of worship but as a living museum. A symbol of the city’s rich past and the enduring spirit of its people.
