“The year is 1954. Imagine the hope in the hearts of the Lithuanian community here in Montevideo.” “Right before you stands the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima. This church wasn’t just built with bricks and mortar. It was built with the dreams of refugees seeking solace and a sense of belonging thousands of miles from their homeland.” The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima stands as a testament to their resilience. In 1949, Father Juan Kidikas visited Montevideo and discovered a Lithuanian community without a Lithuanian-speaking priest or their own parish. He promised to send help and true to his word, two Jesuit brothers, Juan Bruzikas and Vladas Mikalauskas, arrived in 1951. Their mission? To establish a Lithuanian Catholic community. With the support of Archbishop Barbieri, they rallied the community and even sought donations from Lithuanians abroad. It was a global effort fueled by faith and the desire for a spiritual home. Can you picture the scene as the first bricks were laid? Finally, on October 31st, 1954, the church was consecrated. The echoes of Lithuanian hymns filled the air, a sound that connected them to their past and gave hope for their future in this new land. But the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Fátima is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of community and the powerful connection to faith that transcends borders. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the dedication and sacrifice embodied in these very walls.
