Here we are in front of the Iglesia de Los Santos de Los Últimos Días. This beautiful building represents a significant chapter in the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ecuador. The story began in October 1965. The first missionaries arrived in Quito.
Elder Spencer W. Kimball believed Ecuador would serve to fulfill God’s promise. He thought he could bring the Book of Mormon to the Lamanites. Kimball visited Ecuador several times over the next few years. He preached the gospel. The church established a strong presence in Quito. It also grew in Guayaquil. They even found followers among indigenous Otavalans.
The church’s influence quickly spread. Just a few months after the arrival of the missionaries, printed notices appeared in Ibarra. They warned residents to avoid Latter-day Saints. Despite this initial opposition, the church continued to grow.
The first branch meeting happened in March. Missionaries and Manuel Macías Caseras attended in Otavalo. Within a year, the branch had more than 18 members. This marked the beginning of a thriving religious community.
As the number of members increased, so did the need for dedicated spaces of worship. Stakes and districts were organized throughout Ecuador to provide structure and support to the growing church. These stakes and districts played a vital role in fostering a sense of community. They facilitated the spiritual development of members.
In 1978, the first stake in Ecuador was organized. Only four years later, plans were announced to build a temple in Guayaquil. Logistical difficulties delayed the groundbreaking. The Ecuadorian Saints continued to build up the Church. They prepared for a temple.
A significant milestone was reached on August 1, 1999. The Guayaquil Ecuador Temple was dedicated by church president Gordon B. Hinckley. This momentous occasion was followed by another exciting announcement. On April 3, 2016, a second temple was announced. This one would be built right here in Quito.
The groundbreaking for the Quito Temple took place on May 11, 2019. Enrique R. Falabella presided over it. Finally, on November 20, 2022, the Quito Ecuador Temple was dedicated by Quentin L. Cook. This marked a new chapter for the Church in Quito.
Today, the Iglesia de Los Santos de Los Últimos Días stands as a testament to the enduring faith and dedication of its members. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural significance of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ecuador. It all began with a humble prayer on Panecillo Hill. The Iglesia de Los Santos de Los Últimos Días continues to be a beacon of hope and spirituality.
