Didn’t the earth shake when Momotombo erupted? The disaster forced the Mercedarian friars to abandon León Viejo in 1610. They carried their sacred images to this very spot where we stand now before Iglesia de la Merced.

The Iglesia de la Merced stands as a beacon of history and faith. Its story began long ago in León Viejo. Fray Francisco de Bobadilla oversaw the construction of the Convento de la Merced in 1528. It was the first convent in the Nicaraguan province. A fire destroyed the original building but it was rebuilt around 1530 by architect Diego de Alcaraz.

After the devastating eruption the friars rebuilt. The current Iglesia de la Merced was constructed around 1662 by the Mercedarian Friars. However a church dedicated to the Virgen de Mercedes already existed in León Viejo. In the 18th century the church was demolished. Master Pascual Somarriba built the present church on the same site. The plans were adjusted by Friar Pedro de Ávila.

Look at the bell tower. Notice how it stands apart from the facade. It was reconstructed in the late 19th century by Father Pompilio Peña. He repaired damage caused by earthquakes. In the early 20th century the interior was modernized. The side portals however were preserved.

The Iglesia de la Merced’s architecture is a captivating blend. It showcases late colonial baroque style. You can also see neoclassical influences on its facade. Inside the Iglesia de la Merced you will find the oldest image of the Virgin of Mercy in Nicaragua. The image dates back to 1528. Mercedarians brought it from Seville in Spain. After the Cathedral of León the Iglesia de la Merced is considered the greatest example of baroque art in Nicaragua.

The Iglesia de la Merced is more than a building. It is a sanctuary. It is deeply connected to León’s traditions. The Virgin of La Merced is León’s patron saint. Bishop Simeón Pereira y Castellón proclaimed her patron saint on July 17 1912. Every year on September 24 León celebrates its patron saint. This is the date the Catholic Church celebrates the Virgin of La Merced. The celebrations are filled with devotion. They are among the strongest in Nicaragua.

The Iglesia de la Merced is easily recognizable. Its bell tower stands out from the facade. Its location is central near the Parque Central. It is next to the UNAN-León administrative building. The Virgen de la Merced is one of the most revered images. It is a magnet for the Catholic community of León.

The Iglesia de la Merced received a special honor. It was declared a National Historical and Cultural Heritage Site. The law was published on February 15 2012. The declaration recognized the church’s historical and artistic importance. It recognized the Virgen de la Merced as the oldest in Nicaragua.

Take a moment to appreciate this beautiful church. It is more than stones and mortar. It is a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of León. The Iglesia de la Merced stands as a reminder of the past and a beacon for the future.
