Did the Virgin Mary ever attend school? Here at the Iglesia Católica Parroquia La Dolorosa, also known as “La Dolorosa del Colegio,” that very question seems to hang in the air. This church, nestled in Quito, holds a unique history intertwined with the Colegio San Gabriel. The Iglesia Católica Parroquia La Dolorosa isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith, perseverance, and community. Construction began in June 1968, under the guidance of Fathers Alfonso Acosta and José Ribas. They envisioned a grand space for the students of Colegio San Gabriel. The project took years to complete, due to costs and alterations to the original plans. The church, dedicated as the Santuario de “La Dolorosa del Colegio,” was finally consecrated on December 30, 1978, by Cardinal Pablo Muñoz Vega. The following year, on January 6, 1979, it officially became the Parroquia “La Dolorosa del Colegio.” Father Alberto Rubianes served as the first parish priest. The Iglesia Católica Parroquia La Dolorosa has been led by numerous Jesuit priests over the decades. Each has left their mark. The church quickly became a hub for the community. In the 1980s, its youth groups and vibrant music ministry drew in hundreds of young people. Conferences and forums offered a space for parishioners to connect their faith with the socio-economic realities of Ecuador. Today, the Iglesia Católica Parroquia La Dolorosa continues to thrive with a wide array of ministries and groups. From youth groups to family counseling, from charitable works to music ministry, there’s a place for everyone. It also houses a pilgrimage center, drawing devotees of the Virgin Mary, particularly on the 20th of each month. They gather for mass and to seek solace in the loving gaze of “La Dolorosa.” So, as you stand before the Iglesia Católica Parroquia La Dolorosa, consider the generations who have found solace and community within its walls. It stands as a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
