The Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora Reina del Mundo-Carcelén stands proudly in the Carcelén sector of Quito. Its history is a journey. It began in 1997. A small group of Catholics from Ponciano Alto gathered for Sunday mass. They met in the community center. Their dream a church of their own.

In June 1997 the Municipality of Quito granted them land. It was a precarious comodato agreement. But it was a start. The first outdoor mass was held in 1999 under the watchful gaze of Archbishop Monseñor Gonzalez. The community decided on Sunday masses at 10 am. Weather often interrupted these early services.

The first cornerstone was blessed in 2000 by Cardinal González. Construction was slow. Fundraising efforts such as a bingo in 2002 raised 5000 USD. It was enough to begin. The church slowly took shape. Columns rose into the sky. Walls enclosed the space. The roof finally provided shelter.

The first Easter vigil was celebrated in 2006. The church was complete. Father Santiago Vaca had been instrumental. He served as the parish priest from 2001. He guided the community. He saw their dream realized. He witnessed the first communion in 2001. It was held outdoors on the church grounds.

The official consecration of the temple was in 2009. Monseñor Danilo Echeverria presided. The church became a gathering place. A place of unity. A vibrant center of the Carcelén community. The Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora Reina del Mundo-Carcelén is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a symbol of faith. A beacon of hope. It is a story of perseverance. It’s a story you see unfolding every time you visit.
