Welcome to a journey through Quito’s captivating religious history. We are standing before one of its many Catholic churches. As a former Spanish colony, Quito is home to dozens of Catholic churches.

Today, our story unfolds at several significant sites. Each one showcases the rich ecclesiastical architecture that defines this city. These temples pre-date even Quito itself.

Let’s begin with the Santo Domingo Church. It dates back to the 16th century. The church displays a stunning blend of Baroque and Moorish styles.

Next, we visit the Church of San Francisco. Also known as Iglesia de San Francisco, it is one of Quito’s oldest and largest religious complexes. A captivating mix of Gothic and Baroque influences defines its Mudéjar style.

Then there is La Compania, the Church of the Society of Jesus. It stands out with its ornate facade. Intricate interiors are adorned with golden leaf decorations. The craftsmanship here mirrors that of the Church of the Sanctuary. The Church of the Sanctuary is renowned for its beautiful altar.

The Quito Metropolitan Cathedral also known as Catedral Metropolitana de Quito is a grand example of Ecuadorian colonial architecture. Its towering structure stands prominently on the city’s skyline.

We cannot forget the Convent of Mercy. Also known as Convento de la Merced, it is renowned for its impressive cloisters. Religious artwork here reflects the Mercedarian order’s devotion.

The Church and Convent of San Agustin are significant for their historical and architectural value. Having witnessed centuries of Quito’s history, they continue to be important spiritual centers.

Finally, we arrive at the Basilica of the National Vow. Also known as Basilica del Voto Nacional, it is a Neo-Gothic masterpiece. It offers panoramic city views.

Consider including these remarkable churches in your Quito itinerary. Exploring their intricate details provides a deeper understanding of Ecuador’s cultural heritage.

The Santo Domingo Church is a must-visit. Located in Quito’s historic center, it faces the Plaza de Santo Domingo. The plaza is named after the church. It is one of the most important in Quito.

Inside Santo Domingo Church cedar work is covered in gold leaf. Many paintings and carvings adorn the walls. The main altar is especially impressive. Ten side chapels add to the interior’s splendor.

The Chapel del Rosario is the richest and most famous. Visitors can see the Arch of Santo Domingo from this chapel.

The Plaza de Santo Domingo provides a quiet place to relax. Take in the beautiful surroundings.

Iglesia de San Francisco is the oldest religious site in Ecuador. The building features three churches. There are also thirteen cloisters for monks. A library holds historical documents. More than 3500 works of religious art are in the convent’s museum. The complex was built between 1537 and 1560. A century later it was finally completed. Today, it is the largest Catholic complex in South America. Earthquakes have repeatedly damaged parts of the church. It has been included in the 2016 World Monuments Watch.

The Church of the Society of Jesus features gorgeous Spanish Baroque architecture. Work began in 1605 and finished 160 years later. Built over such a long time, it combines different architectural styles. Seven tons of gold were used for the walls and ceilings. The facade is carved in volcanic stone. Pope John Paul II held mass here in 1985. Pope Francis visited in 2015.

The Church of the Sanctuary is part of the Metropolitan Cathedral complex. Built in the Italian Renaissance style, its main gate is a Quitoan Baroque masterpiece.

Quito Cathedral’s construction began in the mid-1550s. It combines Baroque, Moorish, Neoclassic and Gothic designs. Field Marshal Antonio José de Sucre is buried here.

The Convent of Mercy’s construction began in 1701. Its main altarpiece was built by Bernardo de Legarda. The Basilica of Nuestra Senora de la Merced houses one of the most important historical libraries in Quito.

The Church and Convent of San Agustin’s bell tower reaches 37 meters. It contains the same bells placed there in the 17th century.

The Basilica of the National Vow’s construction started in 1892. Local legend says the world will end when it is complete. It is South America’s highest church. Designed in the Neo-Gothic style, its design fused France’s Notre Dame and Spain’s Cathedral of Burgos.
