Perhaps you’ve wondered how a church born from helping heroin addicts in Madrid found its way to Quito. That church is Iglesia Betel. Iglesia Betel began as a small missionary effort. It sought to plant a church in a Madrid suburb in the early 1980s. The team felt guided to minister to local heroin addicts.
Initially, the team hesitated. How could they start a church with such broken people? But Raul, a local gang leader, begged for help. He wanted to escape his heroin addiction. He couldn’t leave Madrid. The team invited him to stay with them for two weeks. That invitation sparked the growth of Betel.
Today, Betel is an international ministry. It encompasses over 100 self-financed communities. These communities span 23 countries. They are dedicated to helping drug and alcohol addicts and their families. The original church plant in San Blas now has over 700 members.
The mid-1990s brought the AIDS crisis. Many early leaders succumbed to the disease. It was acquired through needle-sharing. It was also due to promiscuous living. This dire situation forced others to step up. It became a time of accelerated grace. It was also a time of fast-tracked maturity.
The new millennium opened doors to Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia. Teams of ex-addicts were sent to Moscow, Prague, and New Delhi. They shared their stories. They extended help to others. Within a decade, the Russian team opened communities in Finland and Ukraine. The Delhi team established communities in 16 Indian cities.
These ministries are now run by nationals. They have embraced the missionary vision. The Russian team is eyeing Belorussia and Armenia. The Indian team is looking at Myanmar and Bhutan.
Betel South Africa faced challenges. It almost closed. But it emerged stronger. The team created a large multi-racial community. It stands as a testament in racially-divided South Africa.
The Betel ministry continues to evolve. An International Presbytery was formed. It consists of senior leadership couples from around the world. They meet to pray. They also strategize. They seek to remain relevant. They look to the future of the Betel ministry.
The story of Iglesia Betel is one of transformation. It is about hope. It began with a simple act of kindness. It became a global movement. It shows that even the most broken lives can be restored. This is the legacy of Iglesia Betel.
