Fifty years of sharing the unwavering truth of Jesus. That’s the legacy of Iglesia Bautista Universitaria here in Quito. The church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to the perseverance and faith of those who planted the seeds of Baptist belief in Ecuadorian soil. The story begins in 1950, a time when the Catholic Church held a firm grip on Ecuadorian society. Imagine the challenge faced by the first Baptist missionaries, William and Lois Haverfield, and Gordon and Betty Crocker. Arriving in Quito, they found a land where the very idea of a different Christian faith was met with suspicion. They began their work, holding their first service on November 26, 1950, at a location on the corner of Guayaquil and Olmedo streets. More than 200 people attended that inaugural service at the Centro Bautista Cristiano. It marked the beginning of a new spiritual chapter in Quito. The early days were marked by both growth and opposition. Just a few months later, the first baptisms took place in the San Pedro River, a symbolic immersion into a new faith. Shortly after, the Primera Iglesia Bautista del Ecuador, the first Baptist church in Ecuador, was officially established with nine members. Their message, rooted in the scriptures, often clashed with the established doctrines, earning them the label of “enraged” by some. Despite the challenges, the Baptist community grew. They established a mission in the La Tola neighborhood of Quito, further extending their reach. The arrival of other missionaries strengthened their efforts. By 1953, the Baptist presence had reached Guayaquil, marking a significant expansion of their work in Ecuador. Iglesia Bautista Universitaria stands as a symbol of this journey. It’s a story of faith tested and triumphant. A story of a community built on the foundation of shared belief, a community that continues to share its message here in the heart of Quito.
