In 1991, a beacon of faith emerged in Don Torcuato: the Iglesia Bautista Misionera. This church, located on Avenida Ángel Torcuato de Alvear, has a captivating history tied to the broader Baptist movement in Argentina. The story begins much earlier, in 1881, with the arrival of Paul Besson, a Swiss missionary. Besson, a champion of religious freedom, established the first Baptist church in Santa Fe. His legacy resonates within the walls of the Iglesia Bautista Misionera. He later moved to Buenos Aires, further solidifying the Baptist presence. Besson’s fight for religious liberty included advocating for civil marriage, official death registration for non-Catholics, and even burials for those outside the Catholic faith. He translated the New Testament, making it more accessible, and his advocacy extended to writing in major newspapers for the creation of a civil registry. In 1903, another key figure, Sidney Sowell, arrived from the United States. Sowell, a theology scholar, chose Argentina over Palestine or Syria. He established several churches in Buenos Aires, including those in Constitución, Once, Caballito, and Chacarita. He also founded a theological seminary in 1912. This seminary, now the Seminario Internacional Teológico Bautista de Buenos Aires, continues to train pastors and leaders. The Iglesia Bautista Misionera, though established later, stands as a testament to the dedication and perseverance of these pioneers. It represents the growth and continuation of their mission. The church’s history is intertwined with the larger narrative of Baptist expansion in Argentina. From Besson’s arrival to Sowell’s church planting, the seeds of faith were sown, leading to the eventual flourishing of communities like the Iglesia Bautista Misionera in Don Torcuato. The church’s very existence echoes Besson’s fight for religious freedom. It serves as a reminder of the struggles and triumphs that paved the way for the vibrant faith community present today.
