Did Charlemagne himself once stand on this very spot? Here at the Igelsburg, nestled in the Habichtswald forest near Kassel, the air crackles with the whispers of history. The Igelsburg, sometimes called Engelsburg, may not fit your image of a grand castle. Ancient sketches reveal a simpler structure: four houses perched atop a basalt rock, shielded by palisades. This wasn’t a fortress of stone, but a strategic outpost. It’s believed that Charlemagne used the Igelsburg during his campaigns against the Saxons between 772 and 804 AD. Imagine the bustle of soldiers, the clang of swords, and the echoes of Charlemagne’s commands reverberating through the forest. The Igelsburg wasn’t just a military site. Archaeological digs have unearthed evidence of a pottery workshop dating back to the 14th century, just west of the main fortification. This suggests a small community thrived here, crafting everyday pottery for the common folk. The basalt rock upon which the Igelsburg stands is itself a remnant of volcanic activity from millions of years ago. This same basalt was later quarried nearby, providing material for Kassel’s iconic Herkules monument and Löwenburg castle. By the 12th or 13th century, the Igelsburg was abandoned, its wooden structures succumbing to the elements. Today, only faint traces of its walls and ditches remain. As you stand here, let your imagination rebuild the Igelsburg. Picture the houses, the palisades, the bustling pottery workshop, and the soldiers preparing for battle. The Igelsburg may be a ruin, but its story continues to echo through the Habichtswald.
