Amidst the gentle sway of reeds and the distant lapping of the Warnow River, lies Rostock’s IGA-Park. This isn’t just any park. It’s a testament to Rostock’s resilience, a green heart beating with life and history. Originally a sprawling wetland, this 100-hectare space underwent a dramatic transformation for the 2003 International Garden Exhibition (IGA). The IGA-Park wasn’t just about pretty flowers. It was a key part of a larger infrastructure project designed to ease Rostock’s structural transition. Alongside the construction of the Warnow Tunnel and the new trade fair center, the IGA-Park emerged as a symbol of renewal. The park welcomed a staggering 2.6 million visitors during the exhibition, showcasing “A Seaside Park – A New Flowered World.” 32 countries participated, from Austria to Vietnam, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of gardens and exhibits. Today, the IGA-Park continues to flourish. The park has become Rostock’s largest open-air venue, hosting concerts and events that draw thousands. It’s a place where families stroll along the barefoot path, children explore the whimsical playgrounds, and nature lovers immerse themselves in the tranquil beauty of the Weidendom, the world’s largest living willow dome. The IGA-Park is more than a park. It is a living embodiment of Rostock’s vision for the future, a place where nature, culture, and community intertwine.
