What if statues could talk? This one of Ida Tjokorda Pemecutan IX at the intersection before Puri Agung Pemecutan might tell a tale of courage. It might tell of a king carried by four soldiers. This statue memorializes Ida Tjokorda Pemecutan IX. He fell during the Puputan Badung War on September 20 1906. He died alongside the King of Denpasar I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung who was also called Tjokorda Mantuk Ring Rana.

Puri Agung Pemecutan was the palace of the King of Badung. It was first established in 1686. The palace’s initial location was west of where it stands now. The relocation happened after the Puputan Badung War on September 20 1906. The old palace was destroyed and taken over by the Dutch.

The name Pemecutan comes from the word pecut. Pecut means whip. Kyai Ketut Pemedilan founded Puri Pemecutan. He was also known as Kyai Macan Gading. He was reportedly good at handling a pecut. The pecut symbolizes the majesty of the Puri Pemecutan family. It endures even today.

Dutch records say that Puri Pemecutan fell into their hands late in the afternoon. This was just hours after they captured Puri Denpasar.
