You may be surprised to learn that the Ibrahim Mosque in Malé, while not as grand as the Hukuru Miskiy, holds a unique significance in its own right. This mosque was built in 1697 CE and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Malé. The mosque is located on an elevation, overlooking the busy streets of Malé. If you stand near the mosque, you can hear the sounds of life buzzing around you, including the sounds of traffic and the distant call to prayer. The Ibrahim Mosque is a testament to the skilled craftsmanship of Maldivian artisans. The building is made of coral stone blocks, which are intricately carved and assembled without the use of mortar. It’s a true feat of engineering that has endured for centuries. Unlike many of the other mosques in Malé, Ibrahim Mosque was built by one of the revered Maldivian Sultans, Sultan Jamsudheen Umar Veeru, in the 17th century. Because this mosque is not as large as other mosques, it doesn’t have a huge complex, but to the north of the mosque lies the grave of the Sultan himself. You can see the simple tombstone, and it makes you wonder if the Sultan, even in death, watches over the city. The Ibrahim Mosque still functions as a place of worship, welcoming the faithful to its doors where its history lives on.
