Beneath the thundering I-5 freeway lies a hidden gem I-5 Colonnade Park. It’s a 7.5-acre urban oasis connecting Capitol Hill and Eastlake neighborhoods. These were once separated by the freeway’s construction in the 1960s.

I-5 Colonnade Park wasn’t always the vibrant space it is today. Before 2005 it was a neglected area. Homelessness and drug use were prevalent. Simon Lawton owner of Seattle’s Fluidride bike shop envisioned something different. He saw the potential to transform this forgotten space.

Lawton’s idea was to build a mountain bike park. This would not only provide a recreational area but also displace undesirable activities. It took years of planning. Community meetings and securing grants were necessary. The Backcountry Bicycle Trails Club now Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance contributed countless volunteer hours. Finally in 2005 the park began to take shape.

The first trail Limestone Loop opened in 2007. Phase 2 with more trails followed in 2008. The park features a variety of trails for different skill levels. These range from beginner-friendly options to challenging advanced jumps and drops. The innovative use of space under the freeway has been celebrated. It’s a testament to the power of community involvement. It also showcases a creative solution for urban development.

Today I-5 Colonnade Park continues to evolve. Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance remains involved. They manage ongoing maintenance and improvements. The park serves as a model for other urban mountain bike facilities. It transformed a neglected area into a vibrant recreational hub. It’s a testament to the resilience of the community. The success of I-5 Colonnade Park demonstrates that even seemingly forgotten places can be transformed into something amazing. It’s a wonderful example of innovative urban planning and community collaboration. This unique park stands as a symbol of Seattle’s spirit.
