A brown, slender minaret reaches delicately toward the sky. It marks the spot we’re about to explore. Right here, we stand before Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami. This small mosque holds a story tied to a revered figure. The mosque carries the name of a significant companion of the Prophet Muhammad.

Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami is more than just a place of worship. It is a place where history and spirituality intertwine. Legend says that the construction of Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami was inspired by a dream. Şehit Ali Paşa, a grand vizier, saw something in his dream. It led him to build this sacred space and honor Ebuzer Gıfari.

In 1716, Şehit Ali Paşa erected Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami. He built it as a two-story structure. The sources say that a tomb was revealed and revived due to his dream. This further cemented the mosque’s connection to Ebuzer el-Gıfari. Some even called it the Ebuzer el-Gıfari Mosque.

Who was Ebuzer Gıfari? He was among the first people to embrace Islam. Known for his courage, he publicly declared his faith in Mecca. This was at a time when Muslims faced persecution. He belonged to the Gifar tribe. They were known for their boldness and strength.

Ebuzer Gıfari’s life took him from Mecca to Medina. Later, he settled in Rebeze. There he built a mosque. Though his grave is in Rebeze, Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami holds a symbolic significance. People believe that this mosque marks his “makam”. A makam is a spiritual station or place of honor.

Time took its toll on Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami. In 1812, Nakşidil Valide Sultan, Sultan Mahmud II’s mother, rebuilt it. She chose cut stone for the reconstruction. She also established a foundation to support the mosque.

Look closely at the courtyard entrance. Above the gate, you will see a five-line inscription. It marks the year 1227. Adjacent to the courtyard, there is a charming two-story building. It adds to the mosque’s appeal.

Within the courtyard, ancient remnants whisper tales of the past. These ruins are believed to be from the Ebuzer Gifari Cistern. It shares the mosque’s name. The cistern perhaps dates back to Byzantine times.

Hz. Ebuzer Gifari Cami stands as a testament to faith, dreams, and historical devotion. It links Istanbul to the early days of Islam. Take a moment to reflect on the layers of history within these walls.
