Within the walls of Hz Cabir Cami a profound history whispers. This Istanbul mosque stands as a testament to centuries of transformation. Its story begins not with minarets but with crosses.

Originally a Byzantine church Hz Cabir Cami’s dedication remains uncertain. Some believe it was the church of Saints Peter and Mark. Others point to Saint Thekla of the Palace of Blachernae. Emperor Isaac I Komnenos built the church in 1059. He thanked his patron saint for surviving a hunting accident. Anna Comnena a princess and historian wrote about her mother’s frequent prayers there. The church was renowned for its beauty.

The Ottoman conquest brought change. A devastating earthquake in 1509 damaged the church. Koca Mustafa Pasha a powerful Ottoman official repaired it. He then converted the church into a mosque around 1512. This wasn’t Mustafa Pasha’s only contribution. He also converted another Byzantine church in the Samatya neighborhood.

Hz Cabir Cami has endured numerous trials. A great fire in 1729 caused heavy damage. An earthquake in 1894 destroyed the minaret. The mosque remained closed until 1906. Another restoration followed in 1922. During this restoration a marble baptismal font was moved to the Istanbul Archaeology Museum.

But Hz Cabir Cami’s significance transcends its architectural history. The mosque houses a türbe the tomb of Hazreti Cabir Ibn Abdallah. He was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. Legend says he died near the mosque’s site during the first Arab siege of Constantinople in 678. This burial site adds to the mosque’s spiritual importance. It is known today both as Atik Mustafa Pasha Mosque and Hz Cabir Cami.

The building’s architecture reflects its layered past. It has a domed Greek cross plan measuring 15 meters wide and 17.5 meters long. Three polygonal apses remain. The original narthex is gone. The dome though likely Ottoman preserves Byzantine arches and piers. Frescoes once adorned the south side. They are now covered up. They were discovered in 1957 by the American Byzantine Institute. The frescoes showed Archangel Michael and Saints Cosmas and Damian.

Despite its importance Hz Cabir Cami has never undergone a systematic study. Its hidden stories await discovery. Standing before this remarkable mosque remember the echoes of faith and empire. They resonate through centuries of prayer and transformation. Hz Cabir Cami is more than a building. It’s a living chronicle of Istanbul.
