How about a journey back to the 18th century? Let’s step into the world of Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha Mosque. This mosque is a serene oasis in the Fatih district. It is also known as Hekimoğlu Ali Paşa Camii.

Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha himself commissioned this beautiful building. He was a grand vizier. He served multiple times between the 1730s and 1750s. Imagine him overseeing the construction. The mosque’s completion in 1735 marked a significant moment. It became part of a larger külliye. This charitable complex included the founder’s tomb.

Çuhadar Ömer Ağa and Hacı Mustafa Ağa were the talented architects. They shaped this transitional masterpiece. The Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha Mosque stands as the last major monument. It represents the Classical Ottoman style. This was before the rise of the Ottoman Baroque style in the 1740s.

The mosque’s design emulates 16th-century mosques. However, it also displays newer trends. It is the last Classical-style mosque. It employs the hexagonal baldaquin design. Six main pillars support the central dome. They are arranged in a hexagon around the mosque.

The külliye complex includes a khanqah. There is also a türbe or tomb. A shadirvan provides water. A library offers knowledge. A sebil dispenses drinks. A primary school educates children. The flexible placement of these components is striking. They surround a garden enclosure.

Unusually the main gate features a library above it. The ornate sebil sits at the street corner. It stands next to the founder’s tomb. The hexagonal baldaquin design is unique. Semi-domes fill the spaces between the pillars.

Step inside Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha Mosque. Notice how light fills the space. Admire the tiles from the Tekfursaray kilns. Although of lesser quality than Iznik tiles, they are beautiful. One group depicts the Great Mosque of Mecca. This was a popular decorative feature then.

Take a moment to appreciate the front portico. The main entrance portal is impressive. The mihrab and sultan’s loge are beautiful. Examine the detail on the minbar. Explore the cemetery inside the enclosure. The tomb’s interior is also worth seeing. Don’t miss the sebil and its Tulip Period-style decoration. Finally observe the main north gate and its library chamber.

The Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha Mosque is a treasure. It bridges the Classical and Baroque styles. It showcases the vision of Hekimoğlu Ali Pasha. His legacy lives on in this beautiful complex.
