Hyman Rickover Naval Academy opened its doors in 2005, initially sharing a building with Senn High School. The academy quickly outgrew that space. In 2019, Hyman Rickover Naval Academy moved to its current, dedicated building on West Berteau Avenue. The ceremony was a grand affair, attended by naval dignitaries such as Rear Admiral Jaime Sands, retired Admiral John M. Richardson, and retired Admiral Cecil D. Haney. These leaders praised the academy’s namesake, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, the “Father of the Nuclear Navy,” who, interestingly enough, was a Chicago Public Schools and U.S. Naval Academy graduate himself. Hyman Rickover Naval Academy cadets follow a unique curriculum. The military component is woven into every subject, emphasizing honor, courage, and a student-focused approach. The goal is to create well-rounded individuals ready for both higher education and independent living. Hyman Rickover Naval Academy is one of six military academies in Chicago and consistently ranks among the top high schools in Illinois. The academy’s namesake, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, has a fascinating history. A Russian immigrant, he moved to Chicago with his family and graduated from Chicago Public Schools. He then entered the U.S. Naval Academy. His dedication led him to spearhead the development of the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus. Hyman Rickover Naval Academy stands as a testament to Admiral Rickover’s legacy, fostering the same values of dedication, excellence, and service that defined his remarkable career.
