Beneath the Minneapolis skyline, where the city gives way to rolling hills, lies a winter wonderland called Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area. Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area isn’t just a place; it’s a living testament to Minnesota’s love for winter sports. Originally known as Mt. Normandale in the 1950s, it attracted around 48,000 skiers annually. A six-year snow drought nearly decimated the area, forcing the owners to invest in snowmaking and a sitzlift. Sadly, these efforts proved insufficient, as the manufactured snow hardened and lacked proper grooming. Hennepin County Park Reserve District stepped in, acquiring the area and renaming it Hyland Hills Ski Area. They brought in modern grooming equipment, new buildings, and chairlifts. This revitalization restored Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area to its former glory. Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area now welcomes a staggering 160,000 visitors each year. Despite Minnesota’s typically low snowfall, averaging less than 60 inches, Hyland thrives. This success is largely due to its advanced snowmaking capabilities. The resort boasts 13 trails, ranging in difficulty from beginner to expert, along with two freestyle terrain parks. Two quad chairlifts, a triple chairlift, a rope tow, and two magic carpets efficiently transport skiers and snowboarders up the slopes. In 2016, a $13.3 million renovation dramatically transformed the chalet, more than doubling its original size. The new 36,000 square foot chalet houses a gear shop, rentals, and a restaurant. It also serves as a venue for private events. Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area is not merely a place for recreation; it’s a hub for competitive winter sports. It is home to several ski and snowboard clubs, including Three Rivers Racing, a renowned alpine skiing club. The Minneapolis Ski Club utilizes Hyland’s ski jump for Nordic ski jumping training. So, the next time you find yourself in Bloomington, Minnesota, just minutes from the Mall of America, escape the city bustle and discover the magic of Hyland Ski & Snowboard Area. Whether you’re a seasoned skier or a curious beginner, Hyland’s snowy slopes and vibrant atmosphere promise an unforgettable winter adventure.
