Those drill holes. Do you see them? They’re a silent testament to a near-miss. A near-miss for Hvissingestenen. This colossal rock before us. Zealand’s largest.
Hvissingestenen isn’t just a rock. It’s a glacial erratic. A time traveler from the Ice Age. Imagine its journey. Carried here on a glacier’s slow relentless crawl. It’s a monument to the power of nature. A silent witness to millennia.
In 1966 during construction of a main water pipe near Hvissinge workers found Hvissingestenen. It was in the way. They planned to blast it. To destroy this ancient giant. Luckily people intervened. The Danish Nature Preservation Association and Copenhagen County acted quickly. They saved Hvissingestenen. It was declared protected. It was carefully moved. Now it rests some 90 meters from its discovery site. It sits proudly in Vestskoven.
Look closely at its surface. See the striations? Those grooves tell a story. A story of glacial movement. Of the immense pressure and friction as the ice dragged it across the landscape. The parabolic fractures are scars. They mark Hvissingestenen’s tumultuous journey.
Hvissingestenen weighs about 130 tons. It measures 5x6x3.5 meters. Its composition is primarily granite. A mix of alkali feldspar plagioclase and quartz. From a distance it looks gray. But up close the red alkali feldspar crystals give it a reddish hue.
Notice those holes. The holes are where they almost placed explosives. It’s a chilling reminder of what could have been lost. Now a testament to preservation. A reminder of our responsibility to protect the natural wonders around us.
Around Hvissingestenen are other smaller glacial erratics. Some were discovered during the construction of Frederikssund Motorway in 2010. One 22 ton stone was moved here. It joins Hvissingestenen in its woodland home.
This immense rock isn’t just a geological curiosity. It’s a symbol of resilience. Of preservation. It speaks of nature’s power. Its story deserves to be heard. Hvissingestenen stands as a monument to the past and a reminder of our responsibility to the future.
