Beneath the wide Copenhagen sky, Hvidovre Strand whispers tales of transformation. Hvidovre Strand isn’t your typical beach. It’s a testament to human ingenuity, a beach born from landfill. Over a century, this area evolved. It began as a dumping ground, then gradually transformed with added soil and sand. Hvidovre Strand, once a simple local favorite, became a popular destination for families around 2012. The municipality, recognizing its potential, sought to enhance it further. The original beach design had a flaw. Its orientation trapped seaweed and allowed the sea to erode the sand. This erosion threatened to leach landfill materials into the water. A revitalization project began. This project expanded the sandy expanse, redesigned the meadow path, and added a concrete edge between the sand and the grassy landfill area. Hvidovre Strand now stretches between Hvidovre Harbor and the Mørtelrenden channel. This expansion not only accommodates more beachgoers but also improves the beach’s slope. The repositioning minimizes seaweed accumulation and sand erosion. The concrete edge isn’t just functional. It’s a sculptural element, a poetic interpretation of nature, designed by sculptor Karin Lorentzen. It serves as a sturdy barrier against erosion, a seating area, and a unique landscape artwork. The edge’s design mimics the structure of a white cabbage, a recurring motif in Lorentzen’s work. The cabbage’s form, enlarged and cast in concrete, creates a series of unique elements. These elements, sixty-four in total, were cast from twenty-one molds. Each element can be positioned in four different ways, creating a versatile system of curves and spaces. Hvidovre Strand’s concrete edge invites interaction. It’s a place to sit, play, lean, and gather, blending seamlessly with the beach and meadow. The curves and spaces echo the human body’s anatomy on a small scale. On a larger scale, they mirror the surrounding landscape’s waves and interwoven shapes. Inaugurated in June 2017, the new Hvidovre Strand has become a beloved spot, bustling with activity throughout the summer months. Hvidovre Strand stands as a beautiful and functional space, a testament to how human creativity can transform even the most mundane into something extraordinary.
