“A sweet and romantic melody” That’s how many describe Huszka Jenő’s music. This unassuming plaque commemorates a giant of Hungarian operetta. Right here on this wall we remember Jenő Huszka a composer whose works still enchant audiences.

Born in Szeged in 1875 Huszka showed musical talent early. At five he gave his first violin performance. He studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest. He also studied law at his parents’ request. After his studies he worked in Budapest’s Ministry of Education in the art department.

There he befriended Ferenc Martos a distinguished librettist. Martos wrote the librettos for all of Huszka’s operettas. Their collaboration produced some of Hungary’s most beloved operettas. Huszka’s music is fresh sweet and romantic. It blends Hungarian folk music with Viennese waltzes.

His most famous works include Bob herceg (Prince Bob) Aranyvirág (Golden Flower) and Lili bárónő (Baroness Lili). These operettas achieved immense popularity. They are still performed in Hungarian theaters. They have also been adapted into films.

One little-known fact is Huszka’s early involvement in concert organization. As a young man he even organized a concert for the visiting Siegfried Wagner. The young Ernő Dohnányi also performed at one of Huszka’s concerts.

Huszka’s life wasn’t only music. He was also involved in protecting composers’ rights. He became president of the Composers’ Cooperative. He played a key role in establishing international copyright protections. His efforts brought international recognition to Hungarian composers.

Huskza’s personal life was eventful. He married twice. His first marriage ended in divorce. His second wife was Árányi Mária. They remained married until his death in 1960.

This plaque serves as a quiet tribute to a multifaceted man. It represents a composer a lawyer a rights advocate a husband and a father. His legacy lives on in the sweet romantic melodies that continue to resonate with audiences. Let us take a moment to appreciate the enduring impact of Huszka Jenő. His music is a treasure of Hungarian culture. Remember this plaque the next time you hear a Huszka Jenő operetta.
