Standing in front of Huston-Tillotson University, the heart of Austin’s Black community, you can almost feel the energy of history pulsating through the air. This is not just any university. It’s the first institution of higher learning in Austin, a beacon of knowledge and education that has opened doors for generations of African Americans. Established in 1875, it began as two separate schools: Tillotson Collegiate and Normal Institute and Samuel Huston College, both with their own unique stories. Tillotson, founded by the American Missionary Society of Congregational churches, aimed to provide education for both men and women. It started small, with its first class in 1881, under the leadership of William E. Brooks, the university’s first president. Samuel Huston College, founded by the Methodist Episcopal conference, began in 1876 in the basement of the Wesley Methodist Church. The merger in 1952 of the two smaller schools into one bigger one, Huston-Tillotson College, marked a significant turning point. It became Huston-Tillotson University, the only historically black university in Austin, in 2005. It’s a place where future baseball legend Jackie Robinson, as a young man, coached basketball for a season after a request from his friend and pastor. That makes it a truly intriguing place. Not many universities can say they’ve had such a legendary figure as coach! It’s this rich history that makes Huston-Tillotson University a powerful reminder of the struggle for racial equality and a symbol of the enduring spirit of the Black community. As you walk through its gates, you can almost hear the whispers of those who paved the way for the future generations who are now continuing their journey towards academic excellence and social progress.
