Did a dog really inspire the name of a university? No, not quite. But here at the Husky Spirit Sculpture, we celebrate the beloved mascot of the University of Washington: the Husky. This magnificent bronze sculpture, created by Georgia Gerber in 1995, embodies the very essence of Husky spirit. The Husky Spirit Sculpture isn’t just a static piece of art. It’s a symbol of pride, tradition, and the indomitable energy of the UW community. The university actually had two unofficial mascots before the Husky: the Indians and then the Vikings. Neither name resonated. Local publications often referred to the university’s athletic teams simply as the “purple and gold.” In 1920, students voted to adopt “Sundodger” as the official mascot. This whimsical name, however, was short-lived. Many felt it negatively referenced Seattle’s rainy weather. Just two years later, in 1922, the Husky was chosen. The Husky was deemed easy to cartoon, fitting for an athletic team, and concise for headlines. It also symbolized the Northwest’s spirit as the “Gateway to the Alaskan frontier.” This sculpture stands as a lasting tribute to that decision. The Husky Spirit Sculpture serves as a popular gathering spot for students, alumni, and visitors. It’s a place where memories are made, photos are taken, and Husky pride is on full display. Touch the paw of the Husky Spirit Sculpture. Feel the energy and connect with generations of Huskies who have walked these grounds before you.
