Do baseballs dream of flying over the fence at Husky Ballpark? Welcome to the home of the University of Washington Huskies. Husky Ballpark is more than just a field. It is a place where memories are made. It is where the crack of the bat echoes through the stands.
Opened in 1998, Husky Ballpark has been the proud home of the Washington Huskies. In the beginning, it only had temporary bleachers. These bleachers could seat 1500 fans. A new grandstand was built after the 2013 season. It opened on March 21, 2014. Husky Ballpark can now host up to 2,500 fans.
The playing field was named Chaffey Field in May 2009. This was thanks to a generous donation from Herb Chaffey. He is a 1961 graduate of the University.
Husky Ballpark sits about 600 yards north of Husky Stadium. The left field wall borders wetlands near Union Bay. The UW’s soccer stadium is right next door to the north.
Originally, Husky Ballpark had an AstroTurf infield. It was the only artificial turf field in the conference. In 2005, FieldTurf was installed. The outfield was natural grass until 2013. In 2014, the outfield was converted to FieldTurf as well. Today, the entire field is FieldTurf except for the pitcher’s mound.
The batter and catcher face southeast here. This creates unique visual conditions during sunset games. Most baseball diamonds face east-northeast.
A $20 million project in 2011 added a 2,200-seat grandstand. This included a press box, concession stands, and locker rooms. The Wayne Gittinger Team Building opened in March 2012. Gittinger was a Huskies pitcher in the 1950s.
Before Husky Ballpark, the Huskies played at Graves Field. It was an unlit natural grass field. For one season in 1973, the team even used Sick’s Stadium.
Husky Ballpark offers stunning views of Lake Washington and Mt. Rainier. It is a modern sports venue. The design incorporates the Huskies’ brand. Purple seating and displays celebrate the team’s history.
