Hidden within the bustling streets of Istanbul lies the Hüsseyin Kocaç Cami a small mosque with a rich history. Its unassuming exterior belies its significance. This unassuming little mosque on Istiklal Avenue is undergoing restoration. It is a sweet little place with Kutahya tiles calligraphy colored glass windows and floors covered with İsparta rugs. It will look even better when the restoration is complete.

The Hüsseyin Kocaç Cami dates back to the end of the 16th century. Its builder Hüsseyin Ağa held two prominent positions. He was a Sheikh-ul-Harem. This title had two meanings. It could refer to the women’s quarters. It also referred to the most sacred cities Mecca and Medina. Hüsseyin Ağa held the latter position. He was responsible for the care and administration of these holy sites. He was also a kadi a judge in Medina. He oversaw legal matters concerning the eunuchs who served in the holy cities. His responsibilities were extensive. He received ten gold pieces annually for pilgrimage expenses. He also supervised the people of Medina. He ensured wages were paid water systems were repaired and disputes were settled.

Before his appointment as Sheikh-ul-Harem Hüsseyin Ağa served as a kadi judge in Medina. He was a highly respected figure responsible for disciplining eunuchs and resolving legal disputes. His influence extended beyond religious duties. He played a critical role in the administration of Medina during a time when there was no appointed governor.

It’s believed he built the Hüsseyin Kocaç Cami around 1596. Why he chose this location in what was then an undeveloped part of Istanbul remains a mystery. Perhaps it was to serve the growing Muslim community in Beyoğlu. Or perhaps he wanted a mosque separate from the one at Galatasaray.

In the 20th century the Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet wrote a poem about the Hüsseyin Kocaç Cami’s loneliness. Today the mosque remains a quiet witness to the city’s vibrant history. It is a testament to Hüsseyin Ağa’s legacy. His contributions extended beyond the building of the mosque itself. He served the Ottoman Empire with distinction in several key roles. The restoration project will restore the Hüsseyin Kocaç Cami to its former beauty. Visitors can then fully appreciate this hidden gem. This little mosque stands as a silent reminder of the stories untold. The stories the stones could whisper if only they could speak.
