Did the wind whisper secrets of luxury as it whipped around Hurakia Lodge? Here on Rakino Island, just a helicopter hop from Auckland’s hustle, Hurakia Lodge stands. It commands 300-degree views of the Hauraki Gulf. This isn’t just a lodge. It’s an escape. Built in 2002 by New Zealand-born businessman John MacCullough, Hurakia Lodge has hosted the elite. From America’s Next Top Model to gatherings of the ultra-wealthy Table Club, this lodge has seen it all. Even Justin Rockefeller graced its presence. Hurakia Lodge isn’t just about luxury. It’s about resilience. The vast decks and storm-proof windows can withstand winds up to 250km per hour. Inside, five bedrooms and seven bathrooms await. Two staff rooms and separate garage and utility areas ensure smooth operations. The lodge is designed for both grand gatherings and intimate retreats. Beyond the lodge itself, Rakino Island holds a rich history. Sir George Grey, once governor of New Zealand, briefly owned the island. He even began building a house here. In the 1860s, prisoners of war found temporary shelter on Rakino. Later, commercial fisherman Albert Sanford and his family called the island home for nearly 80 years. Their home still stands in Home Bay. Hurakia Lodge is more than just a building. It’s a testament to luxury, resilience, and the captivating history of Rakino Island. It’s a place where the whispers of the wind meet the echoes of the past. A true island paradise.
