Built in 1911 Huntly House stands as a testament to resilience. This magnificent three-story villa initially graced a one-acre plot in Palmerston North. It was the first house in the city to boast its own electricity supply a true marvel for its time. Imagine the excitement of those early residents.

Huntly House’s name reflects its Scottish heritage. Scottish immigrant Adam Burges and his wife Grace named it after his birthplace Huntly in Aberdeenshire. Their vision created a home that has endured over a century. The house has however endured far more than just the passage of time.

A tornado nearly destroyed Huntly House. During its lifetime it has also survived numerous changes of ownership. In addition a 600km relocation journey. This involved splitting the house into six parts for transport by truck. The journey was fraught with challenges. This included navigating low bridges and resource consent issues.

The homeowners Hayley and Chris faced unexpected hurdles. They overcame these with tenacity. The couple meticulously restored Huntly House. They combined modern comforts with original charm. They managed the challenging budget meticulously. They did this while upcycling many materials.

They successfully transformed Huntly House. They were able to preserve its historical integrity. The result is a breathtaking blend of old and new. The interior features include exposed beams and wooden floors. The color palette is an elegant combination of Resene Quarter Truffle and Resene Quarter Sea Fog.

The exterior is equally impressive. The house features Resene Double Truffle weatherboards. Also there is Resene Half Sea Fog trims. The vibrant red Resene Pohutukawa doors are a beautiful touch. They reflect the surrounding natural landscape.

Hayley and Chris’s restoration is more than just bricks and mortar. Huntly House is a tribute to resourcefulness. It also highlights community spirit. They also use the property for local and community events. This is a space that encourages blue sky thinking. Huntly House continues to serve the community. The couple rents a portion out as an Airbnb.
