Imagine Bonn in the 14th century. The Hürten-Kreuz stands tall. This wayside cross is more than just stone. It’s a symbol of faith. It’s a testament to history. The Hürten-Kreuz marked the route from Cologne to Koblenz. It was a prominent landmark. Today, many cars and trains rush by. They barely notice this historic cross.
This cross has witnessed centuries unfold. It was erected as a monument for penitence in the 1300s. The Cologne Cathedral workshop influenced its Gothic style. Around 1340, some say the Cologne Archbishop Walram von Jülich ordered its construction. Others believe it was around 1360 by Archbishop Wilhelm von Gennep. The Hürten-Kreuz connected to the celebration of the translation of the bones of the Three Wise Men to Cologne. It also related to the expansion of the west facade of the Cologne Cathedral.
As we stand here, imagine the Rhine Romantics. They saw the Hürten-Kreuz as a major attraction. It symbolized Gothic architecture. Numerous sketches and lithographs made it famous. In 1859, extensive restoration work took place. This was due to damage over the centuries. Ernst Friedrich Zwirner, the Cologne Cathedral master builder, led the restoration. The cross on top was replaced with a Gothic finial. The sculptors Christian Mohr and Peter Fuchs renewed the large figures in the base niches. They depicted Christ, John the Baptist, and two angels.
In 1957, the old country road became a highway. The Hürten-Kreuz moved about 50 meters south. By 1979, the original was removed for further restoration. Since 1981, it has resided in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn. The cross received a careful restoration. Here, at the Stadtbahn stop “Hochkreuz,” stands a replica. It’s a reminder of the original’s importance. William Turner even captured it in a watercolor during his 1817 Rhine journey. The museum displays his work, too.
The Hürten-Kreuz gave its name to the Hochkreuz district. It is a lasting symbol. It is more than just a monument. The Hürten-Kreuz connects us to Bonn’s rich past.
