Is it possible for a place to embody both a humble past and a hopeful future? That’s the story of Hume MRT station. It stands as a testament to Singapore’s ever-evolving landscape.
Hume is more than just a station. It is a marker of progress and a nod to the area’s industrial roots. We are standing near the junction of Hume Avenue and Upper Bukit Timah Road. This area was once dominated by the Hume Industries factory.
Hume Industries began its Singapore story in 1923. Back then it was the Hume Pipe Co. They made concrete pipes. Initially located in Katong, the company sought to expand. In 1927 Hume requested land near Swiss Club Road. But the Municipal Commissioners rejected this. They finally settled in Hillview in 1938.
In 1942 Hume Pipes Co shifted to Upper Bukit Timah. It was later renamed Hume Industries. The company grew. It branched into steel pipes and gas cylinders. Hume became a major supplier of pre-stressed concrete. Many expressway flyovers used Hume’s concrete beams.
Many residents of Princess Elizabeth Estate worked at Hume. One of them was Mr. Moss. He was a manager in the Hume factory. His family later moved to Hume Heights. It was exclusive housing for Hume expatriates.
Do you remember the large HUME sign? It stood at the main gate. It was about 12 meters high. The sign was spotlighted at night.
Interestingly Hume Industries once had a windmill. It was probably used as a turbine generator.
In 1983 Hume Industries changed ownership. It was renamed Hong Leong Industries. Eventually Hillview was rezoned as residential. The factory moved to Jurong. Today condominium complexes stand on its old plot.
Hume station itself has an interesting history. It was initially built as a shell station. This was during the second phase of the Downtown Line. That opened in 2015. But the station wasn’t opened then. The projected ridership was insufficient.
However, things changed. The redevelopment of the Rail Corridor increased potential ridership. The transformation of the former Bukit Timah Fire Station also helped.
Construction began in February 2021. Hume station finally opened on February 28, 2025.
The station’s Chinese name uses the character谦. This translates to humility. It reflects Hume’s connection to Hume Industries. The company was known as 谦工业公司 in Chinese.
Hume station makes it easier to visit attractions. These include the Former Ford Factory and the Rail Corridor. Residents can now reach the city center faster. It takes about 30 minutes to reach Downtown station. The Singapore Botanic Gardens is only 15 minutes away.
Hume station has two entrances. One faces Upper Bukit Timah Road. The other faces Hume Avenue. There are covered linkways to nearby bus stops. 60 bicycle parking spaces are available.
