Founded in 1920 Humboldtschule first started as an upper real school in eastern Leipzig. Students from the Leibniz School were its first pupils. In 1927 the school was renamed Humboldtschule after Alexander von Humboldt. This showed a new focus on science and exploration.
In 1935 Humboldtschule merged with the Lessing School. The location was M\u00f6biusstra\u00dfe 8. Only the Realschule classes and some teachers moved. The gymnasium classes went to the Ostwald School. During this time the school was simply called Humboldtschule.
During World War II Humboldtschule faced tough times. Part of the student body served as Flakhelfer in the Luftwaffe. They were even deployed to the Eastern Front in 1945. In 1943 a bombing raid damaged the school. Luckily some students teachers and the caretaker helped put out the fires. They prevented even greater damage.
After the war in 1945 Humboldtschule reopened. It merged with the former Hans-Schemm-School. This marked a big change as girls were admitted for the first time. Before that it had been a boys-only school.
In 1958 Humboldtschule merged with the Nikolaischule. At that time the school had 536 students in 18 classes. The Humboldt-Grundschule was dissolved to make room. In 1959 it became Erweiterte Oberschule Humboldt.
After reunification in 1992 the 27th POS Kurt G\u00fcnther became a primary school. Later the Humboldt-Gymnasium took over the entire building. In 2003 it merged with the Felix-Klein-Gymnasium. In 2006 the school successfully tested all-day classes. Block lessons were introduced too.
Today the Humboldtschule Leipzig is known for its special programs. It offers a science program where students learn interdisciplinary skills. There is also an arts program that focuses on performance music and art. The school also provides a social science profile. Here students learn to deal critically with political topics and express their opinion.
