Upon this hill a monument stands. It’s called the Hill of Friendship. This isn’t just any hill. It’s a place of transformation a testament to peace built on the grounds of former conflict.

The Hill of Friendship in Mainz holds a poignant history. It stands where a Cold War US Army missile base once stood. Think of it bunkers and fences now replaced by green. This area was once filled with military equipment. Asbest-contaminated buildings stood where trees now grow. Fifty-eight buildings were demolished. Thirteen thousand one hundred meters of fence were removed. Fifty thousand square meters of sealed-off land were freed.

Artist Dörthe Bäumer created this hill. Its steps are engraved with messages of peace. These messages are in German English French and Russian languages. They are a reminder of the Cold War era. Nearby you will also see stelae. These art objects remember the fates of people from Russia the USA and Germany. These people were connected through the US base here in the Ober-Olmer Wald.

The Hill of Friendship offers breathtaking views. It’s a symbol of reconciliation a place where nature has reclaimed its space. Imagine the quiet now after the sounds of military activity. The transformation from military base to nature reserve is astonishing. The Ober-Olmer Wald is now a haven for rare and endangered species. Orchids and amphibians thrive in this protected area. A 25-kilometer network of trails now encourages hiking jogging and leisurely walks.

This site offers more than just scenic beauty. It offers a profound reflection on the past. It’s a reminder of the Cold War’s impact. It celebrates the triumph of peace over conflict. The Hill of Friendship invites us to consider the fragility of peace. We must cherish it and work for it.
