Gazing upon the Hüzdai Cami, have you ever considered its humble beginnings? This mosque, nestled in the heart of Üsküdar, Istanbul, started not as a grand place of worship, but as a tekke, a gathering place for Sufi dervishes. The Hüzdai Cami holds a significant place in Istanbul’s history, a testament to the enduring legacy of Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi. Commissioned by Ayşe Hümaşah Sultan, granddaughter of Süleyman the Magnificent, it was dedicated to the revered Sufi sheikh, Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi. Construction commenced in 1589 and concluded six years later, opening its doors to worshippers in 1595.

Originally envisioned as a tekke, the Hüzdai Cami complex expanded over time. It grew to encompass not just the mosque, but also a soup kitchen (imaret), a tomb, a library, a hünkar mahfili (sultan’s gallery), a çeşme (fountain), dervish cells, the sheikh’s house, a fırın (bakery), and even a hamam (Turkish bath). The complex sprawls over a substantial area, a testament to Hüdayi’s influence and the community’s devotion. The Hüzdai Cami showcases classic Ottoman architectural elements. It has witnessed both periods of neglect and meticulous restoration. Sultan Abdülmecid spearheaded renovations in 1855, breathing new life into the aging structure. The minaret, damaged by lightning in 1910, was also carefully rebuilt. Further restorations occurred in 1912 under Princess Fatma, daughter of Khedive Ismail Pasha, and again in 1975 by the Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü (General Directorate of Foundations).

Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi, the mosque’s namesake, was a prominent figure. He was a renowned poet, composer, Islamic scholar, and writer. He oversaw the Küçük Aya Sofya Mosque and preached at the famed Fatih Mosque. He lived a long and influential life, passing away in 1628 at the age of 92. He was buried in the türbe (tomb) located within the Hüzdai Cami complex. His children and grandchildren rest alongside him. The türbe itself is a serene space, marked by green cloths, the color of Islam, draped over the tombs. The Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Foundation now manages the mosque and tomb. They actively engage with the community through cultural symposiums, Koran courses, social events, and charitable activities. The Hüzdai Cami stands as a tribute to a remarkable man and a spiritual sanctuary within the vibrant tapestry of Istanbul.
