Established in 1929 Hubbard High School stands proudly in Chicago’s West Lawn neighborhood. Its red white grey and black exterior hints at the vibrant history within. This isn’t just a school. It’s a community. Generations of students have walked these halls. They’ve learned grown and launched into the world.

Named for American fur trader Gurdon Saltonstall Hubbard the school reflects a rich past. It faced overcrowding in the late 1990s. Recent changes have thankfully lowered enrollment. This allowed for a better student-teacher ratio. Hubbard’s dedication to education is evident. It’s one of sixteen schools nationwide chosen for the EXCELerator program. This improvement model was funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Academics are a priority. Hubbard boasts an IB Diploma Programme for advanced students. Students here typically take their IB exams in May. Advanced Placement classes are available in six subjects. Students can even substitute physical education for JROTC. The school offers a diverse range of athletic programs. The Chicago Public League is home to Hubbard’s successful teams. Their boys’ baseball team notably won the Illinois state championship in 1973. Beyond sports Hubbard participates in the Peer Health Exchange. They receive musical support from the Music of the Baroque.

The school’s dress code is simple. Students wear white grey or black shirts with black bottoms. Class shirts or club apparel are also permitted. Hair dying is allowed. A testament to Hubbard’s inclusive nature.

Hubbard High School’s legacy is also shaped by its notable alumni. Former NFL players Sean Cattouse Kelvin Hayden and Nate Lyles are just a few examples. Ethan Farmer a musician songwriter and record producer also calls Hubbard his alma mater. Actors like Michael Peña and basketball players such as Othyus Jeffers and Aaron Johnson and Diante Watkins further highlight Hubbard’s impact. Lena McLin a composer author and minister served as a music teacher. She exemplifies the dedication of Hubbard’s staff. Hubbard High School isn’t just a building. It’s a place where dreams are nurtured where futures are built and where history is made.
