Founded in 1956 Hua Yi Secondary School boasts a rich history. Originally Hua Yi Government Chinese Middle School it began with 578 pupils and 26 classes on Fowlie Road. Imagine the bustling classrooms. Think of the youthful energy filling those early years.
The school’s journey wasn’t always on Jurong West Street 42. Early locations included Windstedt Road and then Margaret Drive. Each move marked expansion. The school added new facilities to meet student needs. Hua Yi Government Chinese School became a premier school excelling academically and in sports. It ranked alongside Dunman High and River Valley High.
A significant shift occurred in the late 1970s. The school embraced English language classes becoming integrated. This was a response to fewer students learning Chinese. The growing student population necessitated further relocation. In 1983 the school moved to Depot Road. Honourable Dr Koh Lam Son MP officially opened the new building in 1985. This marked Hua Yi’s transformation from a Chinese to an English medium school.
The move to Jurong West Street 42 in 1999 was momentous. It represented a new era of well-equipped facilities. The school welcomed its first Secondary One students in 2000. Interestingly the Ministry selected some Hua Yi staff to start Westwood Secondary School. Westwood temporarily shared Hua Yi’s premises. It used Hua Yi’s facilities before moving to its own location in 2001. Mr Lim Boon Heng MP officially opened Hua Yi’s new building on June 29 2002.
Hua Yi celebrated its 55th anniversary in 2011. The 60th anniversary in 2016 featured Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as the guest of honor. The school has nurtured notable alumni including singer Huang Qing Yuan and actress Hong Huifang. These individuals have contributed to Singapore’s cultural landscape. Standing here today we can feel the legacy of Hua Yi Secondary School. A legacy of education growth and community impact.
