What makes Howard Primary School more than just bricks and mortar? It’s a place where history comes alive! This school, right here in front of you, has been educating young minds since 1898. It’s one of Croydon’s oldest functioning school buildings.

Originally called The Dering Place Board School, it initially had separate departments for infants and older children. It wasn’t until 1924 that these departments merged. Then, in 1930, it was renamed “The Howard,” becoming an Infant and Junior Mixed School under Croydon Council’s management.

Ever wondered who the school is named after? Lord Howard of Effingham, a former owner of this very land, is the school’s namesake. As Lord High Admiral to Queen Elizabeth I during the Spanish Armada, his legacy is reflected in the school emblem – an Elizabethan Man of War in full sail. The Latin word “Paratus” on the badge embodies the school’s motto: “being prepared.”

Interestingly, during World War II, the school hall and the old administration block had a change of roles. They were transformed into a fire station! Howard Primary School has continuously evolved. It underwent expansions in 2002 and 2014 to accommodate a growing student body. One thing remains constant: its commitment to providing a quality education within a caring environment.
