Picture the bustling Kongens Nytorv centuries ago. Right here stood the original Hovedvagten. It was Copenhagen’s main guardhouse.

The Hovedvagten, as we know it today, isn’t the original. The first Hovedvagten played a vital role in the city’s defense. It also served as the headquarters for Copenhagen’s civil guard. Imagine the commanding officer residing here. This building wasn’t just for show. It held a detention center too. Lawbreakers and those disturbing the peace found themselves “accommodated” here.

By the 1870s, Østergade became a fashionable area. Unhealthy housing in narrow alleys like Peter Madsens Gang was replaced. This transformation led to the demolition of the original Hovedvagten in 1874.

A new, pointed building replaced it. It stands between Hovedvagtsgade and Ny Adelgade. Only the clock from the original Hovedvagten was saved. Today, it graces the Kongeporten at Kastellet. The current building does have a clock on its facade.

The street Hovedvagtsgade got its name from the Hovedvagten. It faced Kongens Nytorv. C. Cloetta had his bakery and confectionery at Hovedvagtsgade 8. This bakery grew into a chocolate factory. In 1901, the factory moved to a new building. It was located in Hørsholmsgade.

Copenhagen’s history stretches back to the Viking Age. Imagine Vikings setting sail from these shores. They were explorers and warriors. They traveled to Europe, Asia, and even North America.

Bishop Absalon founded Copenhagen in 1167. By the 15th century, it became Denmark’s capital. Herring fishing brought wealth to Copenhagen. King Christian IV expanded the city in the 17th century. Copenhagen became a major regional capital.

Copenhagen faced many challenges over the centuries. In 1728 and 1795, fires devastated large parts of the city. In 1807, Lord Nelson bombarded Copenhagen. But the city always rebuilt and thrived.

Today, Copenhagen is a vibrant city. It blends history with modern life. The Hovedvagten stands as a reminder of the city’s past. It is a symbol of resilience and transformation.
