He entered the ministry in 1920. He served at the Apostolic Faith Church under Elder Schooler. In 1922, he married Effie Genoa Gordon. She labored by his side. They were married for 57 years.

In 1931, Elder Schooler passed away. John Silas Holly was appointed pastor. Bishop G.T. Haywood made the appointment. He was the Presiding Bishop of the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World. Pastor and Sister Holly led tirelessly. The Apostolic Faith Church was remodeled. The four-flat building became a two-story church. It had a 500-seat auditorium. This project was a victory of faith. The mortgage was paid off quickly. This happened during the Great Depression.

In 1980, Horace E. Smith became pastor. His wife, Susan Davenport Smith, stood by him. He continued the teachings of past elders. Membership increased. The church building expanded. He also became a pediatric hematologist-oncologist. He balanced family, church, and career. His secret was his love for God. Bishop Smith’s life led him to influential roles. He revolutionized ministry around the world.
